Benefits of Postural Alignment
Through a thorough postural assessment, every client gets an individually-tailored program that takes into account your lifestyle, any injuries and your personal strengths, weaknesses, goals and aspirations
Structured around the theories and principles of the Egoscue Method, you will begin to experience the benefits of better posture immediately. After your initial session, you may experience that you are walking and standing taller, improved balance, and slight to moderate pain relief. This however, may only last for a brief period of time. The body has yet to learn how to hold this new posture and therefore reverts back to its original dysfunctional state. Please note this is not a quick fix. Remember, it has taken you a lifetime to develop these specific muscular and mechanical compensations. The process of change and degree of success will take some time and work on your part. However, with continued therapy and training your posture will become more and more functional providing long lasting and permanent pain relief.
Current modalities such as chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, or traditional physical therapies offer a "hands on" manipulative approach to pain relief. As a result, these modalities require you to return on a normal basis, yielding dependency upon others to relieve your pain. Postural Alignment Therapy on the other hand, provides the tools necessary to take back and manage your healthcare on your own.

Sean McCaughey – Postural Alignment Specialist One of a handful of practitioners in Ireland, Sean has recently completed his training with Egoscue University and is now a certified postural alignment specialist. He came across the Egoscue Method (as this method of postural alignment is known) whilst living in the US. After twenty plus, largely enjoyable, years of gaelic football my body was feeling the strain, and I was sadly contemplating retirement, I had migrated to triathlons for a while where the chances of traumatic injury were much reduced but other limitations were soon exposed, cramps, restricted movement and niggling injuries appeared despite what I felt was a well disciplined and informed approach to my training. I really wanted to stay active and my belief is that age should not be a barrier to physical activity, my body however was telling a different story. I initially went to a group exercise class and progressed from there to one to one sessions with a postural alignment specialist to produce a specificly tailored program. I was really only looking for relief from aches and pains and perhaps the possibility that I could participate as a leisure activity in some of my favourite sports, within six months however I was back playing competitive football and feeling fitter than ever. I was so impressed with the benefits and long term effects of The Egoscue Method that I decided to train as a practitioner. What I like about the Egoscue Method is that whilst it borrows to a certain extent from disciplines like yoga, Alexander Technique and other forms of physical therapy the emphasis is on educating people and enabling them to take responsibility for their own health. With the help of a postural alignment specialist clients discover the movements and exercises that will bring the body back into alignment, reduce pain and restore vitality. As a pharmacist I see probably dozens of people a week who use regular pain medication and indeed these can when used appropriately be invaluable. I also sadly see however the outcome of reliance and long term use of painkillers. Painkillers treat the symptom not the underlying cause. I am a great believer in the innate ability of the body to heal and restore itself given the proper stimulus and in my quest over the years I have resorted to physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, osteopathy, Alexander technique, yoga and physical therapy to relieve my aches and pains and in fairness had a fair degree of relief. What impresses me about the Egoscue method and postural alignment is that whilst training I have met chiropractors, physical therapists, yoga and pilates instructors some of whom have many years experience who see postural alignment using the Egoscue Method as the next step a way of enhancing their practice and empowering their clients. It is by no means a quick fix and requires discipline and commitment the reality is you get out what you put in. I find the most motivated individuals are either those who are in pain who have exhausted both conventional and alternative treatments or sports people. Whether you are simply looking for relief from pain or to enhance athletic performance and prolong your career or anything in between there is something for you. The body functions as a whole and correcting dysfunctional postural alignment often can and does not only relieve pain but provide many additional benefits. |
